Cultural Visits, Cultural Encounters in Bwindi Forest, Uganda Cultural Tour, Batwa Communities in Bwindi Forest Park, Cultures in Bwindi Forest. These visits are aimed at creating a thrilling encounter between the tourists and the local communities in order to appreciate the culture and way of life of people living on the peripherals of this park and also develop an understanding of the challenges existing between the locals and the park. Some of the cultural encounters that can be undertaken by tourists include; the Batwa cultural experience. – this cultural encounter is aimed at taking you up close and personal to the bushmen the Batwa and give a snapshot look at their way of life.
During this walk you will be taken to pygmy communities and you will be welcomed by the happy and welcoming community members, these people with help of your interpreter guide tell you the stories of their lives in the jungle and demonstrate to you how they used to co-exist with all the other jungle inhabitants, take you through their food preparation and share a meal with you if you are up for it. You will also be introduced to the jungle clinic and showed the different herbs the Batwa use to heal their sicknesses. This walk usually lasts between 4-5 hours.
This walk is usually carried out every day in 2 shifts and it has a flexible starting time though the last group to depart for this walk leaves at 1400hrs. the Batwa experience is carried out in the Buhoma sector with the start point at Batwa craft shop in Buhoma trading center just a few meters outside Bwindi’s gate. This experience costs 80$ if you are alone, 70$ if you are two to three people engaging in it and 60$ if you are between 4-12 people undertaking this adventure. Only 24 people can do the Batwa experience in a day.
This experience to the Batwa is moderately straining as it involves ascending some slopes that are fairly steep but also can easily be managed by anyone as the guide will move at your preferred pace and the paths are always well maintained by the local residents hence making the whole experience worth every effort invested. Other cultural walks in Bwindi impenetrable national park include visiting communities like- Nkuringo community conservation and development foundation, Nkuringo cultural center, Nyundo community trails, Rubuguri village walk.
During these visits expect to visit local communities in their homestead, learning new skills of craftsmanship such us local brew making, basket weaving, visiting local community schools, and entertainment from the Kiga dance and folklore. While on any of these walks please come with your cameras, packed lunch, bottled water, long-sleeved shirts, and trousers, hiking boots and maybe jackets just in case it rains.
Tourists who undertake these walks should know that they have immensely contributed to the improvement in the livelihoods of these communities as their fees are used in putting up social structures like schools and health centers, providing an income to families and this prevents them from encroaching on the forests and also carrying out poaching for money.
Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Forest Park; Gorilla tracking is done in any of the four sectors of Ruhija, Buhoma, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. Families in Ruhija include; Orozogo family, Bitukura family and Kyaguliro family. In Buhoma there is Habibanja family, Rushegura family, Mubare family and Katwe family.
